WATERVILLE, Maine — Bernard Langlais was born in Maine and made a name for himself in the art world. But many people in his home state don't know it. The name has stuck, immortalized on a steel sign, although the dairy farm has been gone for nearly a decade. The old farm, however, has changed. And current owners John and Holly Arbuckle point to a lively sign of rebirth: birds.

SOUTH BRISTOL, Maine — When Bob Steneck began work at the University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center, one of the early places he chose for research was the local fishermen’s co-op. That was more than 40 years ago. Steneck went on to become Professor B of Marine Science, focusing on the ecology of the ocean. His years of research are now being honored by the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences, where he will be the first University of Maine faculty member to be inducted.
