In the four decades since he opened his namesake winery on Cayuga Lake, Cameron Hosmer has followed the debate over allowing grocery stores in New York to sell wine. “It’s been kicking around for 40 years,” said Hosmer, who founded Hosmer Winery in Ovid with his wife Maren in 1985. “There’s always been two sides to the situation. Like many Catholics around the world, the Rev. John Leo Oduor watched with intense interest as the church introduced a new pope at the Vatican in Rome on Thursday. Oduor, a priest at Christ the Good Shepherd in Oswego, had a special connection: He knew the new pope, now Leo XIV, about 20 years ago when he was still the Rev. Robert Prevost. At the time, Oduor was studying to be a priest at a “formation house” run by the Order of Saint Augustine in Nairobi, Kenya.

New York’s oldest family-owned brewery is embracing one of the newest trends in the market: “mid-strength beer."The latest beer from Utica’s F.X. Matt (Saranac) Brewing Co. is called Saranac Weekend Warrior. It’s a golden pilsner-style lager at 3% alcohol by volume. “Mid-strength” means it’s not as strong as a typical domestic lager (about 5% to 6%), and certainly far less than some 7% or 8% IPAs. And it’s not a low-calorie “light” beer, which are typically 4% to 4.5% ABV.
