Skaneateles club that promotes mental health awareness receives state community service award

Four years ago, the Skaneateles Central School District began a club as students found interest in discussing and supporting mental health among their peers. The club, which became an official after-school activity a couple of years ago, revolves around Morgan’s Message, an initiative dedicated to mental health awareness among student-athletes. Morgan’s Message honors the late Morgan Rodgers, a Duke lacrosse player who died by suicide in 2019.

John Wojcik has coached high school tennis for 25 years. Wojcik coached the Liverpool girls’ team for 18 seasons. So far, he’s coached the Cicero-North Syracuse boys for seven years. In the past quarter of a century, coaching tennis, Wojcik has seen exponential growth between the two programs. That includes the Northstars, a program that is heading in the right direction following a 5-2 win over Liverpool on Wednesday. “C-NS has always had a great program,” Wojcik said.

Syracuse, N.Y. — The building process of the Syracuse East flag football team is an impressive one to watch. The squad continued working toward what looks like a powerhouse season on Monday with yet another big win, this time 58-6 over OnTECH. Syracuse East improved to 5-0 on the season, outscoring foes by a combined 136-39. The news gets worse for upcoming foes: coach Jeff Petties thinks the team is just hinting at its potential.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Solvay baseball coach Joe Kesler implored his team to have a short memory late Monday afternoon. Westhill had just scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Kesler sent his potentially discouraged players up to bat in the bottom of the frame with a simple message. “I just told them, ‘Let’s walk it off,’” Kesler said. Solvay wasted little time in doing just that.

The Skaneateles boys lacrosse squad is finding its groove following a winless start to the season. On Saturday, the Lakers used an eight-goal third period to cruise to a 19-9 win over Liverpool in a battle of state-ranked teams. “We’re happy to win. We played really well against a tough team in Liverpool,” Skaneateles coach Seth Benjamin said. Following a 0-2 start, Skaneateles now has a four-game win streak. That includes three consecutive victories in five days.

The Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse team has trudged through a couple of tough seasons. In the last two campaigns, the Brothers have fell short on breaking double-digit wins. Those seasons came after CBA appeared in the 2022 Class C sectional final. This year, the Brothers have a different mindset as coach Jeremy Boltus, a former assistant coach for CBA, takes on the head coaching role.
