Work to repair a waterline has prompted the temporary closure of a portion of Damascus Road in Augusta on Wednesday and Thursday. Motorists will not be able to turn onto Damascus Road from Wrightsboro Road for thru traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. to noon Thursday, noted city officials in a news release. Motorists needing access to First Tee of Augusta, the Aquatics Center, and University Housing Apartments on Jaguar Way must use Highland Avenue as an alternate route.

A motorist was killed after crashing into a tree in Augusta on Friday. The wreck occurred on the 5100 block of Henderson Road and the driver was pronounced dead at about 2:20 p.m., said Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. "The vehicle was traveling east on Henderson (Road) and left the roadway crashing into a tree," noted Bowen in a news release. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A man was shot in a Grovetown home Tuesday evening in what police said was not "a random act."Wearing masks, two gunmen at about 5 p.m. burst into a home on the 100 block of Joiner Circle at Joiner Crossing Apartments and started firing, according to Grovetown Police. Several shots were fired, with one hitting a man in the chest. The victim was conscious and alert when later taken to a hospital for treatment.

A Richmond County sheriff's deputy was fired and arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stealing a knife he was asked to secure. Deputy Sean McKenzie was charged with theft by taking and violation of oath of office, according to the sheriff's office. He was charged and subsequently fired after allegedly admitting he took the knife meant to be held for safekeeping.

Authorities on Monday arrested an Augusta man suspected in a July homicide on Warren Street. Victim's mother a suspect in fatal Waynesboro shooting

Burke County authorities are investigating a shooting death in Waynesboro in which the victim's mother is a named suspect. Early Sunday, Waynesboro Police found Raynard Ellison with a gunshot would to the chest in a unit at the Magnolia Acres apartment complex, according to a news release from the Burke County Sheriff's Office. He was taken to a nearby medical center where he was pronounced dead.
