Work to repair a waterline has prompted the temporary closure of a portion of Damascus Road in Augusta on Wednesday and Thursday. Motorists will not be able to turn onto Damascus Road from Wrightsboro Road for thru traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. to noon Thursday, noted city officials in a news release. Motorists needing access to First Tee of Augusta, the Aquatics Center, and University Housing Apartments on Jaguar Way must use Highland Avenue as an alternate route.

The incident occurred on Vancouver Road and prompted a multi-agency response for the complex extrication. The victim was transported by helicopter to Wellstar MCG Trauma Center, but his condition remains undisclosed. A man was trapped beneath a small collapsed building in North Augusta on Wednesday before rescue crews managed to pull him free and transport him to a hospital.

A motorist was killed after crashing into a tree in Augusta on Friday. The wreck occurred on the 5100 block of Henderson Road and the driver was pronounced dead at about 2:20 p.m., said Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. "The vehicle was traveling east on Henderson (Road) and left the roadway crashing into a tree," noted Bowen in a news release. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
