SALADO, Texas (KBTX) - Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 2 into law Wednesday, providing what he and other supporters called a historic investment in Texas public education. The law, passed during the 89th legislative session, includes $8.5 billion in new funding for public schools, with $4.2 billion dedicated to permanent teacher and staff pay raises. “Texas is number one in so many categories,” Abbott said during the ceremony at Salado Middle School.

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -The Bryan City Council will meet on Wednesday to consider a $37,000 beautification grant to help revitalize a once vacant building along South Texas Avenue. The grant request and renderings, submitted by property owners Kristy Park and Francisco Aquino, seek to fund façade, landscaping, and signage improvements at 3218 South Texas Avenue. The site formerly known as ‘Planet K’ has been vacant since August 2024.

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -The future of Travis Major Field is once again up for discussion by Bryan city leaders. The Bryan City Council is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss the future of Travis Major Field in executive session, according to a late addendum added to the June 4 meeting agenda. The agenda item says the council plans to deliberate the lease, purchase, exchange, or value of real property—in this case, the facility known as Travis Major Field.

Flags outside the Burleson County Courthouse are flying at half-staff in his honor. Hermes died last week after a battle with cancer.

CALDWELL, Texas (KBTX) -Burleson County is mourning the loss of Sheriff Gene Hermes, who died this week after a battle with cancer. Those who knew and worked alongside him say he was a dedicated public servant, a man of deep faith, and a leader who never stopped working—right up to his final day. Chief Deputy Bill Rios, who worked closely with Hermes, said the department is honoring his legacy by continuing the work he loved. “We’re holding up very well,” said Rios.
