The central question underlying the drama around the Houston Texans' stadium plans is: What work does NRG Stadium need to remain the long-term home of the Texans and Rodeo Houston? The 23-year-old stadium certainly shows more signs of wear-and-tear than its MLB and NBA counterparts in Houston, but the repair numbers offered by recent assessments seemed astronomical to some: $1.4 billion is needed over the next 30 years in maintenance and capital projects.

As county leaders and officials with Bob McNair's nascent football team were closing in on a deal for a new football stadium in the early 2000s, the Texans landed a late concession that would prove to be a financial triumph for years to come. The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, a joint city-county venture responsible for financing all of Houston's major sports stadiums, would take out bonds to build the new football facility for the Texans and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, who rose from a child in Acres Homes to serve as Houston's mayor for eight years and was elected to Congress last year, has died. He was 70. His death was confirmed by Houston Mayor John Whitmire, who said Turner was working in Washington D.C. when he was taken to the hospital and passed away. "Not many people know how close Sylvester and I were," Whitmire said during Wednesday's City Council meeting.

When Houston Texans owner Cal McNair named a new team president last month, the first thing he touted about Mike Tomon's resume was his "extensive history in stadium development."Tomon was previously an executive at Legends, a stadium operations firm co-founded by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, where he worked on arrangements for new NFL stadiums in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and, most recently, Buffalo, which is set to open in 2026.
