App State women’s basketball successfully defended home court Saturday against Georgia Southern. The Mountaineers won an eventful rivalry game 60-56. The Mountaineers had issues with ball control in the first quarter, turning the ball over 9 times. Despite the mistakes, the teams were tied at 10 at the end of the quarter as the Eagles were limited to shooting 20% from the floor.

New App State football defensive coordinator DJ Smith already has a storied history with the Mountaineers, both as a player and coach. Smith is eager to write a new chapter in his story, this time in a much larger role as he looks to help guide the Mountaineers back to the top of the Sun Belt Conference with an old-school approach. This is Smith’s third stint in the High Country.

App State volleyball’s excellent season ended prematurely, winning their quarterfinal match against Georgia State Friday but falling to Texas State in the semifinals Saturday. The Mountaineers defeated Georgia State in the quarterfinals in five sets Friday, 28-26, 21-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8. The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set, with sophomore middle blocker Ava Leahy recording 2 kills and a block assist during that stretch.

After falling to UNC-Greensboro last weekend, App State women’s basketball responded with an absolute drubbing of Clinton College Wednesday night at the Holmes Convocation Center. The Mountaineers controlled the game from the opening tip, cruising to a 101-44 victory. The performance marks the first time the Mountaineers surpassed 100 points in nearly two calendar years when they beat Johnson C. Smith University 107-52 on Dec. 10, 2022.

App State volleyball has wrapped up their regular season campaign, splitting their series against Troy. The Black and Gold won a nail-biter in five sets Thursday, but their win streak finally came to an end at the hands of the Trojans in four sets Friday. The Mountaineers defeated the Trojans on Thursday in five sets, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10. App State would finish the regular season 8-1 in games that go to 5 sets. App State controlled the first set from start to finish.
