App State’s men’s basketball team secured a strong win Saturday against the James Madison Dukes in Holmes Convocation Center. Senior forward Jalil Beaubrun, junior guard Dior Conners, junior guard Alonzo Dodd, graduate student forward CJ Huntley and redshirt senior guard Myles Tate geared up as the Mountaineers starting five. At the start of the game, the Dukes showed a strong offense, matching every shot the Black and Gold made.

April 10, 2024 The 2023-24 season for the Mountaineers men’s basketball team has gone down in history as one of their best seasons. According to Team Rankings, App State was one of 12 schools in the country. to go undefeated at home with a 15-0 record. They went 16-2 in the conference and 27-7 overall, holding them in first place in the Sun Belt conference until the very end.

March 5, 2024 Kermit Smith holds the title of being one of the best App State baseball coaches of all time. Smith gets his experience as an encouraging coach from being a ball player himself in 2000 for Pfeiffer University. He played one season, then met former App State baseball coach and current Duke coach, Chris Pollard. In 2000, Smith was an assistant coach for Belmont-Abbey for a year.

The App State Snowboarding Team is a club sport offered through the school and open to all. February 5, 2024 Justin Abson has proven to be an outstanding defensive player for the Black and Gold. Soccer was the first sport he ever played but, after attending a camp he met his first travel team coach. “My aunt sent me to a travel team as an early Christmas gift,” Abson said. “It took off from there.” Abson attended North Broward Prep for high school and head coach Dustin Kerns noticed him early. Abson was a three time Sun Sentinel All-Broward county selection.

As the topic of education continues to populate news feeds, it has made me think about the role of parents and guardians in education. While general guardian involvement in education has been proven to be beneficial, I believe guardian involvement in the form of monitoring high school childrens’ grades is often more harmful than helpful.
