Alison Caroll Idol, Charlotte Mizelle Lloyd and Adam Hege are projected to win seats on the Watauga County Board of Education. Idol, Lloyd and Hege are projected to defeat Marshall Ashcraft, Chad Cole and Tom Ross with 100% of precincts reporting. The Watauga County Board of Elections approved accepted provisional ballots at their Nov. 13 meeting which allowed The Appalachian to project winners to the Board of Education.

App State football looks to get their third consecutive win Thursday night when they travel to Conway, South Carolina, to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Mountaineers are coming off a 28-20 win over Old Dominion on Saturday, improving their conference record to 2-3 and netting them fifth spot in the Sun Belt East Division. Coastal Carolina comes into this game with a 4-4 record. The Chanticleers started 4-1 before dropping three straight to James Madison, Louisiana and Troy.

Results reported on Election Day are unofficial projections for who will likely win each race. The Appalachian will not project a race for a particular candidate unless there is a statistical certainty the candidate will win. The county boards of elections will certify election results on Nov. 15.

The App State women’s basketball team looks to start a new chapter in the 2024-25 season with new head coach Alaura Sharp. Sharp spent six seasons at Presbyterian College as head coach of the Blue Hose. In her time there she went 76-102 with a .427 winning percentage, winning the Big South Conference Tournament and one NCAA Tournament game, winning in a play-in game against Sacred Heart.

As the App State men’s basketball team prepares for the 2024-25 season, there are many storylines to follow. Pro-life social media influencer Lydia Taylor Davis visited App State Tuesday to speak about her stance on abortion with students. She partnered with App State’s Students for Life club as a stop on her university and college campus tour, “Abortion is Violence.”Davis spent the afternoon on Sanford Mall tabling with App State’s Students for Life club where she set up cameras and microphones for students to approach and debate her.

The food scene in downtown Boone has long been a source of pride for the town. As Boone has been rocked by major changes such as the population growth of the town, the rapid growth of App State and the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, restaurants in Boone have had to adapt. “The size of the college has grown tremendously,” said Michael Bosse, the manager at Macado’s, a chain restaurant based in Salem, Virginia, that opened a location on King Street in 1989.

When Hurricane Helene descended on western North Carolina, the Mountain Pathways School was filled with water and mud. The storm washed away books, furniture, toys and school supplies from the small school built on the floodplains of Howard’s Creek. Christina Sornito and her husband Jon Carter, both associate professors of anthropology at App State, drove out to the school to see the damage on Saturday after the storm. Their 4-year-old son attends Mountain Pathways.
