Lightning strikes have started multiple bushfires and destroyed at least three homes across Victoria amid searing heatwave conditions. More than 500,000 lightning strikes were recorded across Victoria and its coastal waters over a 24-hour period from midday Sunday as bushfires forced western Victorian towns to evacuate. Three homes have been destroyed by lightning: one from a direct hit in Taylor's Lakes in Melbourne's north-west, and two others when lightning started a bushfire south of Mildura.

Katelynn Clark felt certain her home would burn to the ground when a raging bushfire hit the edge of her rural property on Monday night. Ms Clark runs a mixed sheep and cropping farm on the northern edge of the Little Desert National Park in western Victoria where a fast-moving blaze this week destroyed more than 63,000 hectares of land.

Police have recovered the bodies of two people from inland rivers in Victoria and NSW. Emergency services were called to the Murray River at Barooga, NSW at 12.30pm on Friday after reports of a man having difficulty in the water at the end of Micks Beach Road. The body of a 23-year-old man was located in nearby waters about 11.45am on Saturday after a search involving emergency services from NSW and Victoria.

Fire has destroyed one Moyston farmer's house, but the fencing, sheds, and 350 sheep and 50 cattle were spared. No lives have been lost in the Grampians bushfire, but more than 76,000 hectares of land have been burned. BlazeAid has set up a station nearby to help farmers rebuild destroyed fences. Kim Marshall's heart sank the minute she laid eyes on the charred remains of her family home.

A wildlife ecologist says it will take up to 20 years to recover what has been lost in one of the "most biologically important landscapes in Victoria", as a blaze of more than 76,000 hectares continues to burn through the Grampians National Park. The area of the bushfire is currently larger than Singapore, and the flames have destroyed a number of homes, outbuildings, and sheds in the Moyston area.
