In recent decades, jazz has become the music of concert halls and universities. A style that was once considered to be an affront to public morality is now sometimes seen as old-fashioned and inflexible; a music meant only for those in the know. The second night of renowned jazz trumpeter James Morrison’s Collaboration series at the UKARIA Cultural Centre, however, challenged this perception.

In 2015, Adelaide was designated Australia’s first – and, so far, only – UNESCO City of Music. This designation is explained on the Adelaide City of Music website as both a recognition of excellence and an “investment in the future”, intended to “integrate and engage citizens, music makers and creatives”. The jazz tradition fits this noble intention well. Jazz is based in community – in the sharing of music among practitioner and audience member alike.

Huddled deep within the programming of the winter arts festival Illuminate Adelaide is Unsound – a cultish, boundary-pushing two-night event that brings some of the world’s top experimental musicians and performance artists to South Australia. These are artists that might otherwise not find their way to our city, least of all at the tail end of July. It’s a little treat for Adelaide’s weirdos and non-conformists, who get to sample breathtaking performance work.

The idea of a piano recital is synonymous with an image of a grand piano. For most, it is impossible to imagine anything else. For many, it would even be cause for alarm to see something other than a grand piano onstage whilst taking one’s seat in a concert hall. It is therefore not inconceivable that a few patrons of Her Majesty’s Theatre were alarmed upon entering the concert hall last night, to see the first Australian show of Joep Beving’s Hermetism tour.
