PORT CHARLOTTE — When Pope Leo XIV said the Hail Mary in Italian, Latin and Spanish, Carla Velasquez knew she was going to instantly like him. Velasquez, the bookkeeper at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and School in Port Charlotte, said the prayer was done on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Pompeii, one title bestowed on the Virgin Mary. She and other staff members said they were very happy to have a new pope. They talked about it after the school day.
