The Portola Valley Conservation Committee, community volunteers and Scout troops invite the public to spend a couple of hours pulling French Broom. As they have since 2004, participants will pull the invasive weed from public lands and rights-of-way. Conditions are best during the rainy season for pulling the weed out. Once the ground becomes dry, it’s nearly impossible to yank it out of the ground, according to the town.

The Menlo Park Sister Cities organization is accepting applications for the city’s cultural exchange with Menlo Park’s sister city Bizen, Japan. The exchange will take place in late June/early July 2025. Exact dates are being finalized. As an ambassador for the city you will have the opportunity to meet with Bizen city officials, live with a local host family and participate in unique cultural experiences.

Registration for Menlo Park’s summer swim camps opens on Feb. 3 for both the Burgess pool and the Belle Haven pool. Camps are aimed at helping kids improve their swimming skills. The 2025 swim camps begin the week of June 9 and run through the week of Aug. 4. Camps are available for kids ages 5-14. Learn more and sign up at tinyurl.com/mpswimcamp. State Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, is hosting a community photo contest for residents of State Senate District 13, and entries are due on Jan. 31.

The original outpost of the nationwide pizza chain has remained a fixture of the community for more than six decades, and up until last fall, it was run by Bob Larson, the son of founder Bill Larson.

The city of Menlo Park is hosting a family math festival from on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Belle Haven Library, located at 100 Terminal Ave from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The festival is aimed at kids ages 5-12 and their families. Activities will include math art activities, a Rubik’s cube station, logic puzzles, board games, math books for kids and demonstrations from math educators. The event is supported by Mathitude, a Bay Area math engagement and tutoring company.

Menlo Park has determined that the application for the controversial “Willow Park” development at 80 Willow Road, the site of the former Sunset Magazine headquarters, is not consistent with city development standards. As the project was submitted under the ‘builder’s remedy’ provision of state housing law, this determination does not amount to a denial of the project. Consistency review is a required step under state housing law, even if it does not necessarily change the outcome of the project.
