A 42-year-old local barbecue chain is down to just one location. Armadillo Willy’s abruptly closed three of its four restaurants in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and San Jose at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving just the San Mateo restaurant in operation. Two other Armadillo Willy’s locations also shuttered earlier this year, with the Los Altos restaurant having closed Jan. 31 and its Dublin outpost April 19.

Menlo Park residents Lea Redmond and Sam Martinez-Colson have been neighbors for nearly two decades. Now they’re becoming business partners, opening a wine and cheese bar in their neighborhood that aims to be a haven for the community. Haven Wine & Cheese, located in the quiet residential area of The Willows, will offer wine by the bottle and glass, a variety of cheeses and tinned fish. It replaces Habibi’s Salon, which relocated around the corner.

Omakase restaurants along the Peninsula have doubled since 2024. Much of that increase is spearheaded by Sunny Noah, who’s opened three omakase spots in just a year and a half. His latest? Ren Omakase in Menlo Park. “I was lucky to have met so many great omakase chefs,” he said, referring to a style of dining where the chef chooses the menu.

Walk into a new German-inspired taproom in El Granada and you’ll find a menu of German and local craft beers, sausages in hard-to-find varieties and other bites like soft pretzels. Its name? Your Mom’s Haus. “It’s the funniest name ever,” said co-owner Casey Plemons. The name might be tongue-in-cheek, but the menu is no joke.
