When he asks me to teach at the first yoga and music festival, two hundred people per class, under tents, with live music, I'm skittish, to say the least. Also, he adds, he's going to “set me up” with musicians he feels will blend well with my style of teaching. So, my first time with live music, teaching yoga, to a large group. I want to trust him. We couldn’t fathom what would happen.

Boundless Emptiness, 2022. That night in our twenties at the Argentinian restaurant on Lafayette Street, we couldn’t have fathomed it, we four—Josh, Blake, Dana and me. Cornell brought us together, and a decade on, there we were, stealing glances in the loo, making dreamy promises, drinking more than any of us needed to. Everything was possible. We didn’t imagine that one day a decade later, Blake would jump out of a burning tower to his death on a regular Tuesday morning in 2001.

About five times a night, he gets up to walk for several minutes to relax his muscles, to relieve the pain which is excruciating. And this guy has a high threshold. The nature of nerve pain is that we cannot see it. When I place my hand, I can feel the taut, caught energy in certain places along his leg. And I can hear his pain—his stilted breathing, then the long exhale toward which I anxiously turn all my attention. This is week three, and we’re feeling nervous.
