For the past few years, the Voice has aimed to have a semesterly sit-down interview between the editor-in-chief (EIC) and the current sitting president of the university. As the outgoing EIC from the fall semester, I got the chance to sit down with Interim President Groves and Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff Joe Ferrara to talk about some of the biggest issues currently facing the university and its community members. It was like a not-so-secret meeting of the coolest people we had ever seen; a common music taste had attracted them all to The Anthem in swarms. Time and time again, we’ve seen the culture-defining bands of yesteryear fall so easily into the inescapable pit of mediocrity. A band releases a few hits, gets too confident, and proceeds to produce large quantities of the most subpar music imaginable for the rest of time. Fueled by their initial commercial success, they have an insatiable hunger for excess; they just don’t stop, even when it seems like everyone is begging them to.

At the Wharf, a picturesque marine location that was emblematic of the sound we would soon hear, we entered the Anthem buzzing with excitement. We were soon to be delighted by the musical stylings of California’s very own Sun Room. The band got their start on the West Coast as a unique byproduct of the pandemic.
