On Saturday, Feb. 15, Prospect Records, Georgetown’s student-run record company, and D to Z Presents, a student radio show, hosted a benefit concert for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). The concert, hosted in the Leavey Center’s Bulldog Alley, included performances from local D.C. band Pinky Lemon and student bands Wonk, Sense Memory, and Baltimore Avenue. The show drew over 100 people in attendance and, through ticketing and donations, was able to raise over $1,000 for MAP.

D.C. has one of the opioid overdose death rates in the country. But in recent months, opioid deaths have decreased in the District for the first time since 2018, according to a report by the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner—and based on data from the first half of this year, it’s likely that 2024 as a whole will have significantly fewer opioid-related deaths than prior years. From 2018 to 2023, opioid-related fatalities per year almost doubled in D.C., increasing from 213 to 523.

It was like a not-so-secret meeting of the coolest people we had ever seen; a common music taste had attracted them all to The Anthem in swarms. Funneling in through the grand front entrance, we made our way to the theater’s ginormous pit, full of flowy skirts, baby tees, and cowboy boots all buzzing in anticipation for headliner Clairo.

The D.C. hardcore scene kind of sucks. But it didn’t always. Back in the late ’70s and throughout the ’80s, D.C. was the place to be if you were a hardcore punk band. Bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat, known for their fast and aggressive music paired with politically charged lyricism, found fame in our nation’s capital. The booming music scene also birthed beloved venues like the Black Cat and the 9:30 Club to host the District’s increasingly popular punk bands.
