PPL is reporting 544 Lehigh County and 1,802 Northampton County customers without power Sunday afternoon as thunderstorms roll through the Lehigh Valley. As of 2:15 p.m., scattered outages in the Met-Ed coverage area remained largely to the South and West. “The thunderstorm complex from the high plains two nights ago made it all the way to our region this morning. The band of showers and rumbles of thunder will continue slowly pushing south, but should generally weaken with time.

Monday – already expected to see high heat and humidity combine for a heat index that could reach 110 – will also feature elevated ozone levels, earning a Code Orange alert. A high pressure system combined with very light winds and little air recirculation will raise ozone concentrations into the Code Orange range Monday afternoon and evening.

Extreme heat warnings are in effect for the region through Wednesday, with high temperatures not expected to fall below 90 degrees until Friday. High temperatures will range from the mid-90s to near 100 degrees, with high humidity pushing the heat indices between 100 and 110. Today begins a stretch of dangerously hot and humid days.

One person was injured in a shooting early Sunday morning outside an Allentown nightclub. Allentown police said they found a male suffering from a gunshot wound outside Catch22 on the 300 block of Hamilton Street at approximately 4 a.m. He told police that he was outside the club “attempting to de-escalate a disturbance,” when gunshots were fired, according to a news release. The person was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital.

The Lehigh Valley and surrounding region is under an extreme heat warning as dangerously hot conditions are expected to begin Sunday morning and last through Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service forecasts the highest temperatures for Monday and Tuesday, with a high of near 99 expected in Allentown. If temperatures hit 100 degrees, that will be the first time since July 2011.
