A park right along the river, wineries all around the city’s edge and a plethora of art and history museums, outdoor excursions and live events to check out. No, this isn’t Portland, . With its small-town vibe in a city setting, it has (almost) everything conveniently in or outside of it, for work and play. Salem may not be known as a food destination, but those who live in Salem know you don’t have to drive to Portland for a memorable excursion and a great meal.

In early June, a new cafe in the Montavilla neighborhood will start serving breakfast pastries and coffee in the mornings and grab-and-go soups, sandwiches, and salads in the afternoon. Its offerings all sound pretty standard, but this isn’t the average Portland cafe. Behind the counter, Stone Soup PDX is helping the next wave of food industry workers find their footing.

Across the street from Riverfront Park is Salem’s slice of sunshine, Manna Bakery. You can’t miss its welcoming yellow stoop, the smell of freshly baked bread, and the almost constant stream of people in and out the door. The bakery is most known for its breads, which all use long-ferment sourdough starter. The short and sweet name “Manna” means “bread from heaven,” and the baked goods selection is nothing short of that description.

Though the book itself is dense, the cover of Basil Pao’s Carnival of Dreams, a monographic retrospective of the photographer’s 50-year career, evokes weightlessness. An acrobat somersaults impossibly high against an endless sky, framed on both sides and below by downy cumulus clouds brushed with pink and baby blues. There is no ground in sight; his body, horizontal, gazing upwards, is dwarfed by the grandiosity of his environment.

Update: my mom finally found some at our local Costco. The same scenario of having to correct the helping attendant spell this impossible pastry into the database. She bought three. As she opened one, she sang , "do you know how long I have been waiting for you?"

My mom liked the Costco panettone so much, she went back several times and (prior to trying it) didn't know how to say it correctly. Now she can say it right AND spell it (she corrected the Costco worker typing it when he was checking inventory)

For Christmas this year I got the worst cold I've ever had, been stuck with this illness since Monday. Happy Christmas and may you not be sick.
