An 86-year-old Brookline woman who was hit by a State Police cruiser in January is being remembered by her family for her warm smile, her generosity, and love of sports. Margie E. Mendez died on April 5, nearly three months after she was struck by a State Police cruiser on Jan. 15, as first reported in the Brookline.News. Her funeral is scheduled later this week. Born in Baltimore on Jan. 17, 1939, Mendez graduated from Robert R. Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia in 1957.

A Woburn courthouse had to be evacuated Monday morning after a man in a gas mask released pepper spray inside, police said. The man went into the courthouse while wearing gas mask and started spraying pepper spray around 10:25 a.m., according to Woburn Police Chief Robert F. Rufo. Nicholas Akerberg, 28, of Yarmouthport, was apprehended and taken into custody. One police officer was transported for medical treatment, Rufo said.

A serious accident on Interstate 95 in Maine has shut down part of the highway on Monday morning, police said. At 9:05 a.m. Maine State Police wrote on social media that the accident occurred in Kennebunk. “A serious accident on I-95 in Kennebunk (mile marker 23) has shut down all northbound lanes for the time being while crews work to clean up,” State Police wrote. “Try to avoid the area if possible and find an alternate route.

On Friday, Aug. 22, 1975, Ruth B. Pearson left her home in Newton, got into her red Camaro, and headed into the city. She told her daughter that was going into town to return some clothes, and she’d be back. A 61-year-old divorced mother of three, Pearson had a lot to look forward to. Her daughter, the youngest of her three children, had graduated from Yale University and was about to enter Harvard Law School, following in the footsteps of her own father.
