HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - The Hanover Sherriff’s Office says a man who was shot after confronting deputies with a weapon last week has been arrested. Nathan Dean Hamon, 34, faces one charge of domestic assault and one felony assault on law enforcement. Deputies were dispatched to the 10300 block of Shellie Lee Drive for a domestic disturbance around 12:15 p.m. Oct. 4.

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - It was just four months ago that part of the Metro Richmond Zoo caught on fire. The flames destroyed the vet hospital, nine vehicles, medical equipment, and more. “The fire was Sunday night and Monday afternoon we started cleaning up. We had a lot of volunteers that showed up and we started cleaning up. Within a week, the whole rubble, the majority of it, had been cleaned.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) -The U.S. is on track to break a record in the number of firearms confiscated at TSA checkpoints. Last year, TSA stopped over 6,500 guns from being brought onto aircraft. So far this year, they’ve intercepted over 5,000. “I think it’s really disturbing there’s now an announcement at the airport that warns people to take their guns out of their cases, and I just can’t imagine what it’s like to come to this country and hear that announcement,” said traveler Tory Gussman.

HOPEWELL, Va. (WWBT) -Hopewell had National Night Out events at seven locations across the city. Many people attended the event as officers reported seeing a drop in violent crime. Police departments across the country typically hold the National Night Out event in August. Hopewell moved the family-friendly event to October to take advantage of the cooler weather to get more people out.

HOPEWELL, Va. (WWBT) -Violent crime is down in Hopewell, according to the city’s police department. They say that one of the reasons for that decrease is because of a new program that started earlier this summer, which uses a unique approach to help curb violence. Earlier this summer, the Hopewell Police Department partnered with community partners to launch Project Safe, Alive and Free.
