West Bonner’s budget hearing Wednesday night could have gone differently. Without levy dollars, it likely would have been a dramatic and hours-long meeting, something not unfamiliar to Priest River residents, involving closing schools and laying off staff. Instead, Wednesday’s budget hearing took about 45 minutes with no community member questions and kudos from the trustees.

Lakeland Superintendent Lisa Arnold announced her retirement late last week after a stressful year following a failed levy, subsequent budget cuts, and a long campaign for an eventual levy passage. Her resignation means the school district, which serves nearly 4,500 students in the communities of Rathdrum, Athol, and Spirit Lake, will have new leadership next year. Assistant Superintendent Lynn Paslay already submitted her resignation earlier this spring.

Idaho’s largest school district geographically will split into two smaller districts after residents of Grangeville, Kooskia and Elk City approved the deconsolidation Tuesday. The current district stretches from Oregon to Montana, with the schools forming a triangle with Grangeville on one side and Kooskia on the other with Elk City in the middle to the south. The district will now split into two new districts: Clearwater Valley and Grangeville.
