The state’s new minimum teacher salary of $50,252 is a frequent topic of conversation at dozens of Idaho school districts’ budget hearings this month. The question: How do we get our salaries to reach new minimums, equitably? The answers: Some districts are using one-time bonuses because it’s a quick and easy fix, while others worry that strategy doesn’t fulfill the ongoing obligation. The state advice has been conflicting, but ultimately, it’s a school board decision.

West Bonner’s budget hearing Wednesday night could have gone differently. Without levy dollars, it likely would have been a dramatic and hours-long meeting, something not unfamiliar to Priest River residents, involving closing schools and laying off staff. Lakeland Superintendent Lisa Arnold announced her retirement late last week after a stressful year following a failed levy, subsequent budget cuts, and a long campaign for an eventual levy passage. Her resignation means the school district, which serves nearly 4,500 students in the communities of Rathdrum, Athol, and Spirit Lake, will have new leadership next year. Assistant Superintendent Lynn Paslay already submitted her resignation earlier this spring.

Idaho’s largest school district geographically will split into two smaller districts after residents of Grangeville, Kooskia and Elk City approved the deconsolidation Tuesday. The current district stretches from Oregon to Montana, with the schools forming a triangle with Grangeville on one side and Kooskia on the other with Elk City in the middle to the south. The district will now split into two new districts: Clearwater Valley and Grangeville.

When Lakeland School District’s supplement levy passed earlier this week, trustees and the superintendent took a moment to celebrate. But they could not ignore the district’s hard budget realities. Trustees spent most of their Wednesday meeting discussing a potential move to a four-day school week, in hopes of saving money.
