Mick Magher and navigator Bernie Webb have walked away with minor bruising after a spectacular multi-roll crash during the Finke Desert Race. Magher credits the safety gear in the truck for the fact that he and Webb are "surprisingly well". Magher says he plans to return for next year's event, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the gruelling contest.

The legendary Finke Desert Race has wrapped up with some unexpected wins. Travis Robinson took out the prize for the car section of the race, Corey Hammond won the motorbike section, while Madi Healey was awarded the Queen of the Desert title. Health authorities say 43 people were injured during the event, including one man who was flown to Adelaide for treatment.

The Alice Springs Town Council has apologised after a roadside memorial was destroyed without consultation with family and friends. Alice Springs teen Alex Marchant-Powell died on May 31 last year when the car he was driving hit a tree on Bougainvillea Avenue in East Side. The tree became a roadside memorial for friends and family to visit and pay their respects. Several weeks ago mementos, flowers and fairy lights were removed without consultation, leaving those closest to him bereft.

Search and rescue teams have been deployed to section five of the Larapinta trail, 55 kilometres west of Alice Springs. A lone 46-year-old female hiker activated her personal locator beacon (PLB) at about 3pm on Wednesday near Hugh Gorge. Southern watch commander Senior Sergeant Andrew Dunne said emergency services and Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife rangers formulated a rescue plan.
