Heavy rain across Central Australia has been welcomed by residents after a hot summer. Residents are enjoying rare scenes of water flowing down Uluru and the Todd River flowing through Alice Springs. The Bureau of Metereology says flooding is expected to ease from Wednesday across most of the southern part of the Northern Territory. Heavy rain over the past fortnight has brought relief to many Central Australian residents after a scorching summer.

Anangu traditional owners will manage 4 million hectares in the Central Western Desert for biodiversity. Their role has been made official by the creation of an Indigenous Protected Area in the region, which the community says was "a long time coming". Rangers have conservation plans for native princess parrot and great desert skink. Anangu traditional owners have welcomed the dedication of the Central Western Desert Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).

James and Ollie are the best of friends, but they don't get to see each other very often. The 10-year-olds live hundreds of kilometres apart on remote cattle stations in central Australia. The boys are students at Alice Springs School of the Air, but once a term they get a break from their outback classrooms when they and their families flock to Alice Springs for a week of face-to-face learning.

As a child Ben Tyler would weave through tall spear grass, looking for ingredients to put in his pannikin and concoct interesting new flavours of drink. Munching on djilidjilih, or native sugar cane, and occasionally pausing to swat away buzzing march flies, he would explore the tastes and textures of each plant and food he found around his Kakadu National Park home. "I remember collecting leaves and flowers and putting them in little jars to see what would happen to them," the Bininj man said.
