Near West Community Health Fair in Indianapolis offers free screenings

Learn more about your health and the resources available near you April 18 at the Near West Community Health Fair. The free fair is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Haughville branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, 2121 W. Indiana Historical Society wants to interview Vietnam veterans

This fall, the Indiana Historical Society will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, the capital of the former Republic of South Vietnam. The historical society will launch an exhibit that will tell the stories of Indiana’s Vietnam veterans. Tentatively called “Vietnam through their eyes,” the exhibit will consist of interviews and photographs and other memorabilia loaned from veterans.

Learn about lead contamination in Indianapolis during “The Spread of Lead” from 2-3:30 p.m. April 6 at the Garfield Park Art Center, 2432 Conservatory Drive. The free class is taught by Marian University chemistry professor Kamila Deavers. You can learn how to avoid being contaminated by the heavy metal. After a 15-month renovation guided by input from Pike Township residents, the Pike branch of the Indianapolis Public Library reopened March 29. The library branch, which is next to Pike High School and its Freshman Center, closed in December 2023 to install new amenities that were selected by residents in a series of meetings and surveys. The project cost $2,275,000. What resulted was a library that specifically caters to the needs and interests of teens.

But after several failed attempts at getting help, he found comfort in talking about his experiences with men facing similar issues. “It was life-changing for me,” Jackson said. In November, he and his wife, Brandi Pugh, established the westside-based nonprofit BRAVEE — pronounced brave. The peer-based mental health organization provides free group counseling and mental health workshops for men.
