Will Smith started his pro career with zero points in his first eight games. The eye test showed a college star having trouble adjusting to the speed of the NHL game, and calls for him to spend some time in the American Hockey League surfaced and intensified. San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier put a lid on that suggestion. "The plan is for him to be up here, learn up here, play up here," Grier told reporters in October.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - It made sense to think Pavel Mintyukov would become The One on the Ducks' blue line. He burst onto the scene in 2023-24 as a rookie, with lots of quality ice time, moments of physical one-on-one defensive play and scratching the surface of his offensive upside. It also made sense to think Olen Zellweger would become The One. He skates beautifully, with the ability to carry the puck out of his zone and move along the blue line to find shooting lanes.

After finishing his only season at Boston University, Macklin Celebrini was hyping Terriers teammate Lane Hutson in July. "I haven't played with someone like him," Celebrini said on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast. "The way he sees the ice and the plays that he makes - the head fakes. And you don't think you'll fall for them. You're like, 'Nah, I won't fall for them.' Until you fall for them. And you're like, 'Damn, I knew it.' Like everyone else.

Luca Cagnoni's highly successful first pro season - he was one of the top-scoring defensemen in the American Hockey League - earned him a promotion to the San Jose Sharks. Five games with them showed just how much of a leap it can be to establish oneself in the NHL. "There's a lot you can learn," Cagnoni said, speaking after a one-sided 8-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings in March. "Losing sucks but when you lose, you obviously learn a lot. It's just all about playing hard. Making hard plays.

Kings rout Ducks, 6-1, to up their home record to 30-5-4 and keep alive hopes to host Games 1 and 2 at Crypto. Kevin Fiala (x2), Quinton Byfield, Anze Kopitar, Alex Laferriere and Jordan Spence all score as PP cooks. Cutter Gauthier gets the lone Anaheim goal.

Second time Kings have scored three power-play goals in a game this season. (Just the fourth time they've had multiple PP goals in a night). The other time with three came at Ottawa in the third game of the season.

Within seconds of each other, Cutter Gauthier reaches 20 goals for the first time and Anze Kopitar gets to 20 for the 14th time. One a lightning-quick release later that beat Kuemper, the other a smart high-tip that threw Dostal off.
