EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Through their run of regular seasons that have led to four consecutive Stanley Cup playoff appearances, the Los Angeles Kings have iced one of the NHL’s top defensive outfits. Nothing disputes that.

What to do, oh, what to do now with those No. 46 and No. 11 Anaheim Ducks jerseys with “Zegras” emblazoned across the back? Some of them still figure to be worn by the patrons at Honda Center next season and maybe beyond, but Trevor Zegras will no longer be on the ice for the Ducks, with general manager Pat Verbeek completing on Monday the trade that had been speculated, rumored, discussed, dreaded and maybe even fantasized about for many months, perhaps years.

The long-rumored trade of Trevor Zegras by the Anaheim Ducks was always going to provoke a knee-jerk reaction — as every trade seems to do these days. On Monday, general manager Pat Verbeek was either sharply criticized or outright roasted because of the perceived paltry return. Zegras, the runner-up for the 2022 Calder Trophy, was pawned off on the Philadelphia Flyers for a fourth-line center and two draft picks, neither of which is in the first round.

Trevor Zegras, long rumored to be a trade target, finally has been dealt. The Anaheim Ducks agreed to send Zegras to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday for a second-round pick in next week’s draft (No. 45 overall), a fourth-round pick in 2026 and forward Ryan Poehling, a Flyers team source told The Athletic. Zegras, 24, once was thought to be a foundational player for the Ducks, who drafted him with the No. 9 pick in 2019.

Long before they traded for him on Thursday, the Anaheim Ducks had their eye on Chris Kreider, and even though he was across the continent, Kreider watched the Ducks fairly closely while playing for the New York Rangers. "Having played with some of those (Ducks) guys and having close relationships with them, that familiarity, it's a team that I've followed probably closer than other teams out west," Kreider said. "They've got some fantastic vets with great track records of winning.
