The New York Rangers announced Saturday that they have fired coach Peter Laviolette after the team failed to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season. New York entered the season with Stanley Cup aspirations following a run to the 2024 Eastern Conference final and Presidents' Trophy win but finished with a 39-36-7 record and did not have a multi-goal comeback all season until Monday, its first game after elimination.

NEWARK, N.J. - Two days after star Jack Hughes went shoulder-first into the end boards, ending his season, the New Jersey Devils got dealt another blow. Playing March 4 at the Dallas Stars, top defenseman Dougie Hamilton left the game with a lower-body injury that would keep him out nearly six weeks. The Stars took advantage of the undermanned Devils and held a two-goal lead entering the third period. New Jersey looked bound for a painful loss in a stretch full of them.

NEW YORK - Artemi Panarin was one of the last Rangers players to take the ice in warm-ups, just like normal. The Rangers operated as if it were business-as-usual Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

Did you see Ivan Demidov's debut Monday? The way he made the Bell Centre crowd pop? The skill and skating and ability to rise to a moment? The Montreal Canadiens rookie created excitement that radiated through television screens. It was palpable. When's the last time the New York Rangers had that? When's the last time they have had a rookie like Lane Hutson, for that matter? Or a second-year player like the Columbus Blue Jackets' Adam Fantilli? New York is an older club.

SUNRISE, Fla. - A game-tying goal against a defending Stanley Cup champion normally elicits some sort of celebration. Not for the Rangers this year, or at least not now that they are eliminated from playoff contention. After Mika Zibanejad fed J.T. Miller for a second-period goal, the two went through the post-goal motions. They fist bumped and met their teammates for a huddle, but there weren't whoops or grins or much excitement at all.
