If it’s on the land or deep in the sea, it’s likely Greg McCormack has explored it. One could call the Monterey resident an avid bicyclist, but even that description sounds a bit understated considering his résumé. Here’s a snapshot of his adventures on two wheels: the Pan-American Highway, an 18,500-mile journey from Alaska to Argentina; a tour of South Korea, Vietnam and Cambodia; 2,400 miles adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico; and numerous others.

It makes sense—we live in their habitat.

Erik Chalhoub here, nervously eyeing Cal Fire’s recently updated Fire Hazard Severity Zones Map. My North County home sits in a pocket of bright red. According to Cal Fire, it’s considered to be in a “Very High” fire hazard area—the most dangerous level of hazard. Not surprisingly, the red area follows the eucalyptus tree forest that surrounds my neighborhood and others.

In his final action as Monterey Regional Airport’s executive director, Mike La Pier climbed aboard Graniterock’s loader and scooped up a load of dirt, raised it high in the air and tilted the bucket downward, sending the dirt tumbling to the ground. It was a “Mike drop”—as joked by Interim Executive Director Chris Morello—on a 44-year career.
