MITCHELL — The Mitchell Board of Education will get a look at a proposed Mitchell Technical College policy meant to address hazing at the school. The board will review the policy at its next regular meeting on Monday, June 9. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Room 10 at the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy. According to the agenda notes for the meeting, Mitchell Technical College Policy 120 would help bring the school into compliance with national law.

MITCHELL — 1st Fridays on Main has grown into a summer tradition, bringing residents and visitors to Mitchell’s main drag to mingle, eat, listen to live music and generally enjoy the warming South Dakota weather. It’s also a chance to do a bit of good for local organizations through mini-events like the annual Garden Party, where local gardeners pitch in with donations of materials to sell to benefit Habitat for Humanity. That party was rolling again Friday, June 6 in front of the Corn Palace.

MITCHELL — In an extremely tight race, Mitchell School District voters Tuesday night approved Kimberly Lofgren and Terry Aslesen for three-year terms on the Mitchell Board of Education. Vote results from the Davison County Auditor’s Office show Lofgren received 527 votes and Aslesen received 512 votes. The third candidate, incumbent Deb Olson, was narrowly edged out in the vote, coming in with 498 votes, just 14 votes short of Aslesen's total.

BROOKINGS — Faith Werkmeister had her eyes set on a teaching career when she enrolled at South Dakota State University four years ago. And by all measures, she succeeded. But it didn’t exactly go as she expected. During her time in Brookings, Werkmeister switched gears and changed from the early education program to the elementary education program and is now one of 11 inaugural graduates from a program that was launched just two years ago.
