Having reviewed this wine for many years, quite simply, it never disappoints. It takes an old-school approach, meaning the fruit is evident, but not flashy. It is more an amalgam of various parts (fruit, wood, tannin, oak, acidity) rather than a one-trick pony. Blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, vanilla, sandalwood, charred wood with light violet, and new leather and plum command the initial sips.

Winemaker Bibiana Gonzalez Rave has been making wine for almost 30 years. And though she has made wine in France, and South Africa, it is Sonoma that she calls home. The cool growing sites she harvests from provide the structure for this Chardonnay. You’ll find soft resin, guava, white peach, apricot, light caramel, delicate lemon-lime kefir and muted honeysuckle.

It was nice to be able to try a Roy Piper wine with some age on it.  The only other time I was able to try one was just after release and while impressed, it needed time.  This time, the bottle was mature and signing and despite being from a "lesser" vintage, the wine showed impressively.  Purple in color with some ruby hues, opaque and bright.  The nose has cassis, black cherries, "purple floral" notes, slight graphite and char.  Medium to full bodied.  Medium tannins.  Nice balance.

Medium gold in color clear and bright.  The nose has serious oak on it including baking spices, toast and vanilla but also has lemon cream and slight honey notes.  Full bodied.  Slightly oily texture.  On the palate, there is meyer lemons, spice and vanilla.  Long finish.  At age seven it seems clear that the oak will remain a featured quality in this wine.  Of course, for some that is great and others, a turn off.  This seems close to peak but should stay at this level for another six to ten years.
