May 23-Victoria water lily leaves stretch up to eight feet wide, big enough to be seen from space. But how much can these thin leaves hold? Denver Botanic Gardens asked that with its water lily weigh-off, challenging gardens around the globe to find the strongest lily pad. More than a dozen gardens weighed in on social media, and Denver Botanic Gardens released the results last fall. However, the garden that created the biggest Victoria species was missing from the ranking.

May 22-Lancaster County's first fruit of 2025 has arrived. This year, strawberries dodged cold snaps and heavy rain. Now they need sunshine. Several pick-your-own strawberry farms throughout the county opened this week, with more opening Memorial Day and later. Depending on the varieties, the weather and supply, berry picking should continue for at least a month.

From the ruffly white petals of a Helen Curtis azalea to the dark purple blooms of a Blue Danube variety, every plant at Hershey’s Azalea Farm owes its existence to Nancy Plumley. As the fifth-generation owner of the farm, she handles everything from taking cuttings to growing to hardening off 6,000 of these woody plants. At this farm, the Hershey Red azalea was discovered in the 1930s. Nearly a century later, there’s still plenty of red at the corner of Hershey and Azalea lanes near Gap.
