FAIRMONT — On April 29, 1863, 300 Union soldiers watched as 2,500 Confederate cavalry men descended on Fairmont. The Confederacy forced the Union to retreat, but not before Union soldiers killed 50 to 60 Confederates at a cost of one Union soldier and four other who were wounded. Confederate Gen. William Jones had a different estimate. “Indeed, Gen. Jones told Capt. Chamberlin that we had killed and disabled about a hundred of his men,” the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer wrote on May 5, 1863.
