Last fall, I participated in PopTech, one of the oldest tech-ish conferences around. It was founded in 1996 by Bob Metcalfe, inventor of Ethernet, and John Scully, the former CEO of Apple and Pepsi, and used to take place in Camden, Maine, which had become a playground for the technorati. These days, it takes place in Washington, D.C., but it still works to serve as a place where people come to talk about the messy intersection of technology, culture, politics, and just about everything else too.

In the world of tech/finance that I came from, every organization must have its own quadrant chart. (It’s also called the 2×2 matrix.)Basically, a quadrant chart serves to show how your organization is different from and better than all the other offerings in the market. Humanity is waking up to the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence, but we don’t yet understand our role. People talk about unexplainable AI when they should be more concerned about the unexplainable humans running the companies that develop the AI. (Hiya, Sam!) People worried about AI taking their jobs and taking control are competing with a myth. Instead, people should train themselves to be better humans even as they develop better AI.

Okay, friends! I finally found Norman Mailer quote I sought, H/T @internetarchive Barney Kelly: "There are dollars which buy a million’s worth of groceries, and dollars which have influence." Now I need to know who first said, "AI can simulate a storm, but it can't make it wet"?
