HALLOWELL — Lately’s, a bagel shop by morning and pizzeria by afternoon and evening, plans to fill an empty Water Street storefront in the next month. Owner Ryan Ellis said he hopes initially to open Lately’s from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday to Sunday, with the hope to eventually operate seven days a week and extend hours past midnight on the weekend. The final major hurdle before setting an opening date, Ellis said, is a health inspection.

AUGUSTA — Kennebec County commissioners approved the county’s budget for the next fiscal year during a meeting Tuesday, officially adding 9.6% to a spending total that has ballooned over the past five years. Much of the hike in the new $25.5 million budget came from wage increases for employees of the Kennebec County Correctional Facility and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, the county’s two biggest departments.

AUGUSTA — Officials approved a 9.6% spending jump to the Kennebec County budget Wednesday after more than two hours of deliberation, sending the budget to the county commissioners for final approval next week. The budget committee — a group of municipal officials from across the county who have been meeting since mid-February — approved the budget by a 6-1 vote, with Gardiner City Clerk Kathleen Cutler the lone vote against.
