Consumers noticing hiked prices on certain fireworks can blame new tariffs on China, where the bulk of all fireworks come from, say those in the business. That said, a number of sellers say they were able to get out ahead of the tariffs and consumers won’t notice significant tariff-based hikes when they buy up their sparkly goods in the coming week. Area residents have noticed substantial increases on fireworks, but the bulk of those are apparently for more typical reasons.

PAWTUCKET/CENTRAL FALLS – The Elizabeth Webbing Falls Hydroelectric Project is proposed on the Blackstone River running between Pawtucket and Central Falls, the latest installment in a series of such facilities on the river. Justin Bristol, of applicant One Drop Hydro LLC, said the .7 megawatt project is considered a small one, and would have a footprint of only about 800 square feet above ground.

NORTH SMITHFIELD – As part of a discussion about budget priorities Monday, the Town Council approved spending $8,500 on the MySeniorCenter software system to allow tracking of check-ins and activities during a transition to a future of town-run senior services. The council approved the request by Town Administrator Scott Gibbs, who shared how the town previously secured a grant from the Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging for transit services, but the program didn’t go well.
