CUMBERLAND/LINCOLN – The Cumberland-Lincoln Rotary is marking five decades in existence by doing something its members have been committed to since the beginning: giving back to their communities. Instead of hosting a banquet to pat themselves on the back, members are running Step Into Summer! It’s a summer activity drive for select 6th- and 7th-graders in need in Cumberland and Lincoln.

Local library staffers are urging residents to advocate with their representatives in hopes of saving federal funding, saying certain services patrons rely on could be diminished. Celeste Dyer, director of the Cumberland Library, said they participated in a meeting last week with the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS), which oversees municipal and school libraries across Rhode Island.

CUMBERLAND – Talks on the refined application for the redevelopment of the Ann & Hope Mill focused on tying the property into its surrounding community and making sure it doesn’t stand on an island. Much of the conversation on the formal preliminary plan April 10 centered on making sure the property is connected to Broad Street on one side and Mendon Road on the other, for pedestrian access and to support the local business community.

Back in 2022, as part of the Rhode Island Press Association’s goal to enhance our relevance with the public, we revived High School Journalism Day. As co-president of RIPA at the time with my friend Elyse Major, and now president, I see this Friday in late April as a great way to engage with young people who either want to explore a career in this important field, or simply want to be more intelligent news consumers.
