Fake “Republican sample ballots” backing Democratic-backed candidates have been sent to registered Republicans in at least two area school board races. The political action committee involved in one mailing will cease and desist, as well as mail out a correction to all those who received the mail from the PV Forward PAC. Another similar mailing occurred in New Hanover and involved both a Boyertown Area School Board candidate and township supervisor candidates.

DA: Killing of man who shot Pottstown police officer was justified

POTTSTOWN — Last month’s police shooting and killing of a 25-year-old who had shot and wounded a police officer four hours earlier was justified, according to an investigation conducted in its wake, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele announced. “The investigation of the April 6 incident in Pottstown is completed and found that it was a lawful use of force by police officers,” the DA stated in a press release.

POTTSTOWN — Historic Pottsgrove Manor held a May Day celebration on Saturday, kicking off a series of special summer programs. The event included games, displays, music and demonstrations of colonial arts and crafts. Pottsgrove Manor is the home of John Potts, the founder of Pottstown. Built in 1752, the home showcases early Georgian architecture and tells the history of John and Ruth Potts, their 13 children, and the paid, indentured, and enslaved people who lived and labored here.

UPPER POTTSGROVE — The first-ever veterans memorial in Upper Pottsgrove has been completed after seven years of effort, and it will be celebrated with a dedication ceremony on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m.U.S. Navy veteran and longtime township activist, Dennis Elliott, has been the prime mover behind the effort. It was an effort that found traction with the passing of Elliott’s best friend, Mo Schaeffer, a disabled veteran and West Pottsgrove Police officer.

POTTSTOWN — A second anti-Trump protest Saturday also drew more than 100 people, this time to the busy corner of State and Wilson streets, where signs, shouts and slogans opposing President Donald Trump and his policies were on highly visible display. As with the May Day protest at High and Hanover streets on Thursday, the protest was peaceful, well, until the end, when things got a little dicey.

POTTSTOWN — More than 100 people turned out Thursday evening to protest the policies and presidency of Donald Trump, joining in a May Day protest that is said to be nationwide. The event was the first of two planned for Pottstown. A second will be held at the intersection of Wilson and State streets, in the shopping center located there, on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.“I’m here because I fear the loss of our democracy,” said Pottstown resident Angie Sacco.

In the upcoming May 20 primary election for municipal offices in The Mercury coverage area, there are three Republican contests in Chester County; five Republican contests and one Democratic contest in Berks County, and seven contests in Montgomery County, all but one of them Republican. The primary election for municipal offices is the time when candidates for the two parties run to secure a slot on the November election ballot.
