Backlash against Governor Gavin Newsom for disparaging a USC Professor who said that California would be facing a 75% increase in the price of gas after closing refineries continued on Monday, with state lawmakers joining in the criticism of the Governor. Last week, USC Professor Michael Mische warned that gas could hit as high as $8.42, or a 75% in price, thanks to the pending closure of two key Californian refineries.

Governor Gavin Newsom issued a new model ordinance on homeless encampments on Monday, pushing cities across the state to begin removing encampments in a “humane” way. According to the ordinance, cities and local governments are now encouraged to begin removing encampments, specifically ones deemed as “persistent camping” sites, as long as they follow the guidelines listed in the ordinance and follow three basic principles.

Budgetary problems in the city of San Diego have been seemingly endless since last year. In November, San Diego City Schools announced a $176 million deficit. In February, the city itself was $258 million in the red. Last month, it grew even worse when it was recalculated to show that they were over $300 million in debt for the upcoming fiscal year.

According to a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) poll released on Friday, the vast majority of Californians want to have a proof of citizenship requirement when registering to vote for the first time. The IGS poll found that 71% of Californians want that proof of citizenship requirement for first time voter registration, with proof being a passport, REAL ID drivers license or some other form of government issued ID. Only 24% opposed such a policy. 5% in total showed no opinion.

A bill to require legacy media outlets to give at least 120 days advance warning through an intent to sell notice before a sale of a local news company  continued to be heard in the Assembly this week. Assembly Bill 611, authored by Assemblyman Alex Lee (D-San Jose), would specifically require a legacy local news organization, at least 120 days before the final execution of any transaction agreement, to provide a notice of intent to sell.
