The City of Santa Maria has a new police chief. City Manager David Rowlands announced Monday that Christopher Williams has been appointed Chief of Police. Williams comes from the Oxnard Police Department, where he most recently served as Assistant Chief and led the Field Services Bureau. Williams’ first day will be Monday, April 28. He succeeds Chief Marc Schneider, who retired in November 2024.

NASA's SPHEREx and PUNCH missions are scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base Saturday evening. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that will deliver the payload into space is currently scheduled to launch at 7:10 p.m. on March 8. Following stage separation, about eight minutes after liftoff, the rocket's first stage booster will return to Vandenberg Space Force Base, landing at Landing Zone 4.

In an effort to discourage out-of-control St. Patrick’s Day partying, the San Luis Obispo Police Department announced two upcoming Safety Enhancement Zones. Safety Enhancement Zones are periods of time during which fines for violations related to noise, unruly gatherings, open containers, and public urination are doubled. Fines range from $700 to $1,000.

The man convicted of shooting and killing a Santa Maria Navy veteran was sentenced Monday to 50 years to life in prison. In October 2024, Ron Tutay was convicted of first degree murder for the death of Gerald Williams. The shooting happened on the evening of July 2, 2022. Williams was walking outside Louie B's bar in the 200 block of East Main Street when Tutay shot him in the back. According to prosecutors, Tutay had waited on the sidewalk for over an hour before shooting Williams.

California State Parks is planning a series of prescribed burns along the northern San Luis Obispo County coastline starting Tuesday, March 4 through Friday, April 11. At Montaña de Oro State Park, firefighters will burn more than 500 brush piles at sites throughout the park. Approximately 250 brush piles will be burned at Morro Bay State Park. Ten piles will be burned at Estero Bluffs State Park and another 50 at Hearst San Simeon State Park.
