City of Santa Maria names new police chief

The City of Santa Maria has a new police chief. City Manager David Rowlands announced Monday that Christopher Williams has been appointed Chief of Police. Williams comes from the Oxnard Police Department, where he most recently served as Assistant Chief and led the Field Services Bureau. Williams’ first day will be Monday, April 28. He succeeds Chief Marc Schneider, who retired in November 2024.
SpaceX rocket loaded with NASA telescope to launch from Vandenberg

NASA's SPHEREx and PUNCH missions are scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base Saturday evening. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that will deliver the payload into space is currently scheduled to launch at 7:10 p.m. on March 8. Following stage separation, about eight minutes after liftoff, the rocket's first stage booster will return to Vandenberg Space Force Base, landing at Landing Zone 4.
SLOPD announces Safety Enhancement Zone for St. Patrick’s Day

In an effort to discourage out-of-control St. Patrick’s Day partying, the San Luis Obispo Police Department announced two upcoming Safety Enhancement Zones. Safety Enhancement Zones are periods of time during which fines for violations related to noise, unruly gatherings, open containers, and public urination are doubled. Fines range from $700 to $1,000.
Man convicted of shooting death of Santa Maria Navy veteran sentenced

The man convicted of shooting and killing a Santa Maria Navy veteran was sentenced Monday to 50 years to life in prison. In October 2024, Ron Tutay was convicted of first degree murder for the death of Gerald Williams. The shooting happened on the evening of July 2, 2022. Williams was walking outside Louie B's bar in the 200 block of East Main Street when Tutay shot him in the back. According to prosecutors, Tutay had waited on the sidewalk for over an hour before shooting Williams.
Prescribed burns planned along coast from Los Osos to San Simeon

California State Parks is planning a series of prescribed burns along the northern San Luis Obispo County coastline starting Tuesday, March 4 through Friday, April 11. At Montaña de Oro State Park, firefighters will burn more than 500 brush piles at sites throughout the park. Approximately 250 brush piles will be burned at Morro Bay State Park. Ten piles will be burned at Estero Bluffs State Park and another 50 at Hearst San Simeon State Park.
Woman suffers major injuries in crash into building in Solvang

A woman was airlifted to the hospital after crashing into a building in Solvang on Friday. It happened at about 7:40 a.m. on Mission Drive at Skytt Mesa Drive. According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the vehicle was traveling between 35-40 mph when the driver crashed through a fence and into the building. Fire officials say the woman suffered major injuries. Her teenage passenger was reportedly uninjured but taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Paso Robles fire department to conduct training at park, school site

Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services will be conducting a training drill at Centennial Park on Friday evening. The drill is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Feb. 28 and conclude by 8:30 p.m.Residents will notice signs in the area announcing the training event and multiple fire engines at the park during the drill. Fire officials say the training will not include live fire.
Restrictions going into effect at Vandenberg beaches for plover nesting season

Starting this Saturday, March 1, seasonal restrictions will be in place at Surf Beach and Ocean Park to protect the Western snowy plover during its nesting season. Each year, between March 1 and September 30, Vandenberg Space Force Base is required under the Endangered Species Act to enforce certain restrictions at all of its beaches. This includes staying out of posted areas. Dogs, horses and kite flying are also prohibited.
Prescribed burn planned at Carrizo Plains this week

CAL FIRE SLO plans to conduct a prescribed burn at the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve this week. The burn is tentatively scheduled to take place Tuesday, Feb. 25 through Wednesday, Feb. 26, starting at 10 a.m. each day. The burn will be conducted on the American Ranch Unit of the reserve. Approximately 588 acres will be burned to reduce the risk of a future wildfire and as part of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's habitat restoration plan.
Work on Jack Creek Road Bridge replacement to result in closures this week

Initial work on the Jack Creek Road Bridge Replacement Project is scheduled to begin on Monday. The bridge, which is located at Paso Robles Creek north of Highway 46 and west of Templeton, is set to be replaced this summer. According to the San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department, the work starting this week will result in the closure of Jack Creek Road at the bridge from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. February 24 through February 28, Drivers will be detoured to Vineyard Drive.
