Meruelo will build an arena-village in Reno. Alex Meruelo is getting something from Reno, Nevada that Phoenix politicians would not give him. Money to build an arena-village. Meruelo left Phoenix with a billion dollar check in his pocket after failing to get an arena in the Phoenix metropolitan area for his National Hockey League franchise built. NHL owners basically took his business away and sold the franchise to Ryan Smith who took the business to Salt Lake City.

Billions of public dollars have been thrown at the Pacers and Thunder ownership groups. There probably are a few people who are complaining that the National Basketball Association’s television ratings will be depressed because the league’s crown jewel event, the Championship series, is being played between Indiana and Oklahoma City. Indianapolis is the 25th biggest TV market in the United States while Oklahoma City comes in at 47.

The racetrack will be downsized. There will be no Triple Crown winner in Thoroughbred Racing’s biggest events of the year nor will there be technically a Belmont Stakes as the racetrack is closed as it is being rebuilt and that will result in a significant downsizing of the venue at 7,500-seats. This year’s Belmont Stakes will be held at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York north of Albany. The 2026 Belmont Stakes will also be held at the Saratoga Race Course.

The final vote on spending is scheduled on June 2. The Denver city council is on board with spending $70 million to help the ownership of the National Women’s Soccer League’s expansion Denver franchise build a stadium. The franchise’s majority owner, Rob Cohen, wants to build a 14,500-seat stadium and surrounding entertainment district in an area called the Santa Fe Yards. That parcel of property could be available very soon.

Things are quiet in Tampa Bay. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis claims that he has been assured by Major League Baseball that his state will remain a two-MLB team state no matter what happens with the Tampa Bay Rays franchise. There doesn’t seem to be much news coming out of the Tampa Bay market concerning the future of the Tampa Bay Rays franchise.
