UFC 298 just wrapped up a great night of fights in sunny southern California. The Honda Center saw all manner of action from the athletes, but there were a couple stinkers that didn’t quite pass muster (looking at you Ian Machado Garry). We’ll get to Ian’s fight in a second but first, let’s bask in the glory that was Ilia Topuria putting Old Man Volkanovski right to bed. Tucked him in and sang him a lullaby, he did. But we’re actually kind of sad to see “The Great” get handled like that.

UFC 298 has come and gone and we have a new featherweight kingpin. Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria were having a hell of a chess match through the first round and a half. Volkanovski managed to chew up Topuria’s legs while Topuria managed to find Volkanovski’s head with his fists on several occasions. As the latter stages of the round began, Topuria managed to find a clean right hand to the jaw of Volkanovski, putting the champion out cold, Topuria claiming the crown for himself.

There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big if you believe in yourself. And Ilia Topuria certainly believes. He actually may believe a little too much, going from talking about who is (and isn’t) getting a title defense before he’s won anything to wearing and even snatching away Alexander Volkanovski’s UFC Featherweight Championship in the leadup to their UFC 298 main event. At times it felt like Ilia was taking things too far.

Rivalries are the at heart of any sport. Lakers vs. Celtics. Yankees vs. Red Sox. Ali vs. Frazier. So much of the history of sports is told through lens of the greatest of rivalries. Thus, I figure it’s time to evaluate the greatest rivalries in the history of the UFC. To begin, I need to define what I mean by greatest. Am I referring to the most entertaining? The most competitive? The most impactful? I’m going to go with the most impactful.
