For the last seven of my 20 years, I’ve been addicted to my phone. I used to be embarrassed to say this, but I’ve reached a point where I want to talk about it more so I can hold myself accountable. I go through phases where I feel absolutely terrible and incredibly guilty about the amount of time I’m spending on my phone. Other times, even when I am on my phone more than necessary, I just try not to think about it.

Sometimes, quitting is necessary. Let me reword that — sometimes, changing it up is necessary. I tend to have difficulty allowing myself to quit one thing and try something else. It can be hard to feel OK about quitting something because it means you didn’t see it all the way through. I’m sure we’ve all succumbed to the pressure of hustle culture and believed that “winners never quit and quitters never win” at some point.

The past week has been filled with overwhelming and anxiety-inducing news notifications popping up on my phone screen nonstop. From the minute I wake up to the minute I go to bed, I’m delivered another headline I don’t know how to handle. So, I’m getting back into a habit I haven’t been prioritizing recently — reading a book in the morning before checking my phone for the first time, and at night after putting my phone down for the final time.

I’ve written before that it’s necessary to read books of different genres because each genre has something different to offer. As I’ve tried to do this myself, it’s become clear that memoirs are the books that have the strongest hold on me. Reading fiction lets you imagine things and places that typically can’t be experienced in real life, and for so long, I chose to read only fiction for that reason.
