Footage captured by a neighbour appears to show the moment a large fire engulfed a detached home in Moray earlier this week. The property, at Brodie Place in Forres, was gutted by a fire which broke out shortly before 1pm on Wednesday, June 4. Video footage submitted to The Northern Scot shows smoke pouring out of the property before fire crews arrived at the scene.

The owner of a prominent Moray firm is retiring from the business he founded after it was acquired by a global company. Alan James founded AJ Engineering in 1999 but has now made the decision to step away from the business and retire at the age of 71. It has been acquired by RSK Group which describes itself as a “global leader in the delivery of environmental and engineering solutions”.

A church which was closed as part of cost-saving measures nearly two years ago could soon be given a new lease of life. Alves Church, which was founded in 1845, was put up for sale by the Church of Scotland shortly after its closure in December 2023. The church, located between Elgin and Forres, was among many in the north of Scotland to be closed by the organisation as part of a broader plan to reduce its financial burden.

A man from Southampton has launched a new venture in Dufftown after spotting a gap in the market. Sam Matthews opened Beinn, a coffee and bookshop, on Saturday. The 33-year-old moved to the town with his partner Kelly Braund and their dog just two weeks before the UK was forced into its first coronavirus lockdown more than five years ago.

After sitting empty and in a state of disuse for more than half a decade, a town’s much-loved pub is back thanks to one woman’s unexpected leap of faith. The Stuart Arms in Dufftown was closed by its previous owners in February 2020 but has now been revived and reimagined as The Stillman Bar and Restaurant by Fiona Brown. Ms Brown, a former nanny, returned to her hometown in 2017 after 25 years of working around the world.
