FORT BRAGG — Nearly two years ago, then Spc. Brian Lieberman had just returned home from work when he heard gunshots ring out near the pool area of his apartment complex, the Reserve at Carrington Place near Reilly Road. Lieberman grabbed his personal gun, ran outside and identified himself as a medic and used a Food Lion grocery bag to seal the chest wound of a 14-year-old girl who had been shot in her lower back.

Officials have released the name of a man shot and killed May 4 at a Cliffdale Road apartment complex. According to the Fayetteville Police Department, Donte Maurice Vanclief, 36, was shot multiple shortly before 10:30 a.m. at Barton's Landing Condominiums. He was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Medical Center, police said. "At this time, there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active, and all involved parties are cooperating," a news release said.

A 78-year-old wife of a retired Army chief warrant officer was identified by police as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run April 12. Suk Kyong Szafranski was struck by a vehicle around 8:30 p.m. in the area of North Reilly Road and Telfair Drive, police said. She was pronounced dead at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, according to the Fayetteville Police Department. The incident happened just blocks from the Fayetteville home she shared with her husband of 50 years, according to her obituary.

A Fayetteville man has been arrested after a tip in a fatal hit-and-run April 12 led to a damaged vehicle in the yard of his home, according to a news release. Jamal Andre Holliday, 35, is charged with felony hit-and-run and driving with a revoked license in death of a pedestrian on Reilly Road near Telfair Drive. He was booked into the Cumberland County jail on April 29. A Police Department spokesperson said the victim's identity is awaiting confirmation from the State Medical Examiner's Office.

A Fayetteville-area wildlife removal expert says that snakes and spiders are the most dangerous wild creatures in our region. Thomas Grant, who has owned For the People Pest Control and Wildlife in Fayetteville for the past five years, said April 24 that he has encountered a host of problematic critters in his 13 years in the wildlife control industry, including fire ants, coyotes and skunks. But, he said, the most dangerous are spiders and snakes.
