Police surround Burnsville High School following graduation

BURNSVILLE, Minn — Dozens of squad cars are surrounding Burnsville High School the same night as the school's graduation ceremony. KARE 11 has a crew headed to the scene as we work to learn more about what led up to this law enforcement response. According to the school website, the ceremony was scheduled at the school from 6 to 8 p.m. During a livestream of the ceremony, there did not appear to have been any issues. Duluth Police search for missing man not seen in a month

David Storbakken was last seen downtown. DULUTH, Minn. — Police in Duluth are looking for a man who hasn't been seen in a month. David Storbakken, 41, was last seen in the downtown area on Monday, May 5. Authorities describe Storbakken as 6 feet tall and 160 pounds, with a faded eagle tattoo on the back of his left hand. Anyone who knows where he might be is encouraged to call 911.

BLAINE, Minn. — There is a police presence at the Northtown Mall in Blaine Friday evening. Video from people inside the mall shows multiple law enforcement officers holding firearms. The person who took the video told KARE 11 they were there around 5:30 p.m. when police told them to leave immediately.
Portion of Highway 55 to be closed until fall

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — Commuters on Highway 55 in Plymouth will have to go out of their way this summer. Road work begins on the highway Monday, June 16, between Revere Lane and West Medicine Lake Drive. During that time, motorists will need to detour onto I-494, I-394, and Highway 169. This is phase one of a project called Station 73 TRIP (Transit and Regional Improvement Program). Officials say it involves significant roadway, transit, trail and utility improvements.

MINNEAPOLIS — A verdict has been reached in the trial of Derrick Thompson, who is accused of killing five woman in a crash in Minneapolis two years ago. KARE 11 is awaiting the verdict to be read. Thompson is charged with multiple counts of third-degree murder and criminal vehicular homicide. KARE 11's Lou Raguse is in the courtroom and says it is packed with members of the Somali community. An overflow room is expected to be full as well.

MILLE LACS COUNTY, Minn. — It's been 30 years since Brian Barrett was last seen, and today the sheriff is saying the case is still open and tips continue to be sought. According to the Minnesota BCA, Barrett was last seen by his uncle on the morning of June 6, 1995. He was 19 at the time. Later that day, officials say his car was found abandoned in Olson's field near the wildlife management area in northern Mille Lacs County. No one has seen or heard from him since.

MINNEAPOLIS — It's nearly time for The Sharpening. If you've been around Lake of the Isles, you have probably seen a 20-foot pencil sculpture in John and Amy Higgins' front lawn. The idea to create the massive wood sculpture was hatched after a powerful windstorm blew the top off of an oak tree that had stood for over 100 years, the Higgins' told KARE 11 back in 2022. Artist Curtis Ingvoldstad of Big Woods Sculpture was commissioned for the piece.
Dollar Tree damaged after woman crashes into building

GREENFIELD, Minn. — Two people were hurt Wednesday after officials say a woman drove into a business. It happened around 5:20 p.m. at the Dollar Tree store in Greenfield off Highway 55. According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, an older woman crashed into the store. She and a person who was in the store were hurt with what was described as minor injuries and released from the scene. Authorities are now trying to find out what led up to the crash.

Closing arguments will begin Thursday, and then the jury will decide whether Derrick Thompson is innocent or guilty of multiple counts of third-degree murder and criminal vehicular homicide. KARE 11 Meteorologist Jamie Kagol says a cold front approaching will clear out recent wildfire smoke and bring more seasonable temperatures to the state. The front will begin to roll into Minnesota Monday around 4 p.m. In the afternoon, thunderstorms will pop up in the western half of the state. Heavy rain, strong winds and hail are possible, especially for west and southwest Minnesota.
