The meandering Swan River splits Western Australia’s capital – water-loving locals identify as being from either north or south of it – and the narrow metropolis stretches along 90-plus miles of Indian Ocean coastline, making it one of the longest cities in the world. West Aussies typically shorten names, a reflection of their easygoing nature.
