A draft document of how the federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry plans to allocate $45.5 million to WA's sheep and wool sectors has been leaked. In the draft, the department notes that the funding may not go far enough. Farmers say it offers no solution to give the industry more security. Grants are expected to be opened in July as part of a co-design process.

West Australian Labor has been accused of doing a "grubby deal" to secure votes that could leave the iconic dhufish at risk of being made extinct. Earlier this week Premier Roger Cook said if his party was re-elected he would secure access entitlements and a minimum licence period of at least 10 years for commercial fishers.

Small-scale meat producers in southern Western Australia say they are delighted but puzzled by a key butchering service's move to keep slaughtering and processing their stock. For months the Dardanup Butchering Company (DBC) had planned to cease offering so-called "service kills" for small-scale and independent producers. "Service killing" is the practice of slaughtering and processing livestock on behalf of a farmer who retains ownership over the meat.

The Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) of Western Australia has suspended operations after uncovering financial misconduct within the organisation. Late last night the agricultural lobby group put itself into voluntary suspension to address the issues. It will pause the collection of membership fees and staff will be stood down in the short-term. The PGA acknowledged there was a "financial deficit" but would not disclose the exact amount of money that was missing.
