1 INTRODUCTION The long-term care sector represents a substantial share of the economy. In 2017, the publicly-funded long-term care spending was on average 1.5% of the gross domestic product across countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and about 2.2% in the United Kingdom (OECD, 2019). The publicly-funded long-term care program in England is called Adult Social Care (ASC).

eLife assessment This is a binocular rivalry study that uses ECG to present visual stimuli pulsing in line with cardiac events, to examine whether systole-entrained stimuli (i.e. presented during the period where the heart has contracted) are suppressed within visual awareness. Arguably out of line with this idea, the dominance durations were increased for systole-entrained stimuli.

Whether it is the satisfaction of a delicious meal, the thrill of success, or the drive to accomplish a goal – dopamine is central to our ability to experience pleasure, stay motivated and feel rewarded (Salamone et al., 2003; Schultz, 1997). However, it is also vital to how we learn and form lasting memories (Shohamy and Adcock, 2010; Takeuchi et al., 2016). So, how exactly does this neurotransmitter help lock memories in place?
