Lisa Platt was 15, an exchange student returning to Toronto from Paris when the plane she was in overshot the runway and burst into flames near Highway 401, a crash eerily similar to the Delta Airlines accident at Pearson International Airport on Monday. It was Aug. 2, 2005. Platt was sitting beside Aurélie Durel, the girl whose family she had been living with as part of a French exchange program, and who would now be living with Platt and her family for a month to learn English.

Toronto Harbour was cloaked in fog on the night of April 30, when the Thomas Rennie ferry left the Jack Layton terminal, destined for Hanlan’s Point with six passengers and 11 crew. Additional lookouts had been posted on the vessel, due to reduced visibility. It was 10:21 p.m.Fifteen minutes later, after breaching the marine exclusion zone meant to keep planes from hitting boats in the harbour, the three-storey, 900-passenger ferry collided with airport property, as reported by the Star last year.
