The U.S. Department of Education has launched a Title IX investigation into the Tumwater School District over claims the district allowed a trans athlete to participate in a girls basketball game. The Tumwater School Board voted last week in favor of a resolution to ban trans girls from competing in girls sports. Despite that, the education department is threatening to withhold federal money if Washington state continues to allow trans athletes on girls teams.

Washington arts organizations are questioning whether changes to a federal program will disqualify them from receiving grants. New guidelines are tied to President Trump’s efforts to get rid of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. The National Endowment for the Arts recently updated guidelines for its Grants for Arts Projects. The new guidelines point to orders signed by Trump. They state applicants will not operate any programs to promote DEI or gender ideology.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — The busy intersection of Bellevue Way NE and NE 4th Street in Downtown Bellevue is surrounded by skyscrapers, retail shops and a park. But before the development, in the 1920s, the area was farmland run predominately by people of Japanese descent. An oral history nonprofit called Densho has collected some of the voices of the individuals who lived in Bellevue during that time. One of those voices is from Mitsuko Hashiguchi, who lived on a farm here.
