Since Ryad Soltane launched his new gluten-free patisserie just two weeks ago, a stampede of Toronto customers have run the Montreal pastry chef off his feet. The shop, located near Bloor and Shaw streets, sells croissants, cakes, baguettes and other French pastry delights — all without gluten, and many which are also vegan and nut-free.

Last Saturday morning a group of about 30 protesters, who appear to be associated with far-right organizations, staged a demonstration in front of the Princes’ Gates at Exhibition Place. Dressed all in black, participants held banners that said “mass deportations now,” “D.E.I is how nations die” and “remigration saves our nation,” and shouted slogans in support of a far-right figure.

Later this month, a new kind of rock climbing gym is set to open on Toronto’s waterfront. “Climbing gyms in Ontario have been done the same way for a long time,” said Alejandro Aquino, the owner of Ethos Climbing. “They're usually kid-focused and family-focused. They're in industrial areas or … places without windows,” he said. Not so at Aquino’s new facility. The bouldering gym, located at 128 Queens Quay E., across from Sugar Beach Park, is an adult-focused space where the sunlight streams in.

YWCA Toronto workers at shelters, childcare and employment centres citywide have taken the first step toward a possible strike. For more than a year, over 250 unionized employees with the charity have been working under an expired contract. Under the agreement, which elapsed in March 2024, the lowest paid full-time staff make less than $38,000 per year.

Facing a budget shortfall, the Toronto District School board is in the deep end, mulling over belt-tightening measures that could see downtown school pools shutter. Citywide, Canada’s largest school board owns and operates 66 pools. The aquatic facilities are used by Toronto kids and youth as part of gym classes and swim practices, and are also rented out to the City of Toronto and private groups. But they don’t come cheap.
